5 QUICK QUESTIONS with Festival of Trees Lead Organizer Becky McGrath

first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Apple recently caught up with Becky McGrath, lead organizer of We’re One Wilmington’s Festival of Trees, for five quick questions. What’s it like planning one of Wilmington’s most popular community events?“I have a lot of help; it’s certainly not just me. I’ve got an awesome team of 12 volunteers. For example, Karin Bloom takes care of the bake sale. Tammy McElligott handles all the decorating. Nathalie Hayduk takes care of all the entertainment. Jomarie O’Mahoney and Catherine Maiella take care of our Member Social. Jen Bolanos and Pam Almedia tag all the ornaments on the Angel Tree. And we have other team members as well helping out wherever they can. Planning starts in the summer. It’s hours and hours of work put in by tons of people. But it’s really a pleasure. They’re all amazing people to work with. We work really well together.”Are there any changes to this year’s Festival of Trees compared to years past?“Yes, the biggest change this year is we opened a day early, although not to the general public. The event is getting more and more crowded each year. We wanted to make it a more comfortable atmosphere for folks who might be older or need room for wheelchairs and walkers. We invited the Senior Center to come out on Friday morning. A couple of groups from Windsor Place are coming on Friday afternoon. The teachers and staff of Wilmington Public Schools have also been invited to come on Friday after school. Lots of the teachers don’t live in Wilmington, so they may not want to make the drive back to town on the weekend. There’s a lot of trees this year decorated by schools and student groups.”How many donations are you anticipating this year?“We’re estimating 118 donations, which includes 60-70 tall trees. It’s definitely a record year for donations. I think we’re reaching the maximum allowed for the venue. When you visit this weekend, just think of all the people — hundreds of community members — who put their heart and soul into these trees. We’re so grateful to the community.”How many people attend Festival of Trees each year? Will the event ever outgrow Villanova Hall?“Based on raffle ticket sales, we suspect about 2,000 people come through during the weekend. We really like where we are. The location keeps it feeling like a nice a community event. It’s so close to the Common. It’s really convenient for all the other activities going on, including the Town Tree Lighting on Saturday night and the Sons of Italy’s Breakfast with Santa on Sunday morning at the Knights of Columbus. It really is just the perfect spot. I think we’ll stay here, we just might have to cap the number of donations at 120, our magic number.”How much does the Festival of Trees raise each year? Where do the funds go?“Each year it climbs. The amount raised almost doubles each year, which is pretty amazing. Last year, after expenses, we cleared $50,000. And that’s without charging any admission fee — that’s raffle sales and bake sales. The event’s proceeds allows We’re One Wilmington to do so many things. We recently made a $2,000 sponsorship to the Elderly Services Department’s new Memory Cafe. We sponsored the “Revive Civility” program at the Wilmington Memorial Library.  We purchase holiday gifts requested by Wilmington families. We’re supporting 21 families this year. We paid over $3,000 in utility bills for people in emergency financial need. We have care packages we send out to residents who are struggling financially or emotionally. We hand out $8,500 in scholarships annually. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.”BONUS QUESTION: Which is your favorite tree this year?“I have to admit, the cupcake tree is my favorite. It’s so adorable.”Becky McGrath (bottom left) and some of her team of organizers.Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. Follow Wilmington Apple on Twitter. Follow Wilmington Apple on Instagram. Grab close to buying Ubers Southeast Asia business Report

first_imglReutersRide-hailing service provider Grab is close to buying Uber Technologies Inc’s Southeast Asia business, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.Singapore-based Grab may sign a deal this week or next, the report said citing people familiar with the matter.Under terms of the proposed agreement, Grab would buy out Uber’s operations in certain markets in Southeast Asia and Uber will take a stake in Grab, according to the report. The structure of the deal would be similar to the one Uber struck with China’s Didi Chuxing in 2016, when the San Francisco-based company sold its local operation in exchange for a stake in the company, the report said. The  report comes as the ride-hailing giant is slowly curtailing its Southeast Asia operations to boost fledgling growth.SoftBank Group-backed Uber have had issues with some local regulators, including more recently in the Philippines, and seeing a slew of exits by senior executives in Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and India.Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi last month said that the company could turn profitable if it cut costs of its business such as operating in developing markets.Grab has separately been in discussions with existing backers, including SoftBank Group Corp., and new investors for additional capital, according to the Bloomberg report.last_img read more

Displaced Barry Farms Residents Sue DCHA for Loss of Housing

first_imgResidents of the historic Barry Farm Public Housing development filed a lawsuit against the District of Columbia Housing Authority (DCHA) Aug. 29 in U.S. District Court. The suit alleges the private developers under contract with the Housing Authority have significantly reduced space allotments in redevelopment plans that would effectively displace the complex’s mostly Black tenants.According to a copy of the filing, many residents would “stand to lose their housing because the number of two-, three-, four-, and six-bedroom units that accommodate them will be significantly reduced as part of the planned redevelopment of Barry Farm. Additionally, the tenants say they were led to believe that 1,400 units would be built – with 444 units of varying sizes set aside as public housing – but now are told only 344 public housing units will be built, a loss of 163 (2-, 3-, 4-, and 6)-bedroom units, according to the Washington Lawyers’ Committee. The lawsuit also alleges that “once conditions in a particular unit deteriorated to the point that the unit was uninhabitable, DCHA often pressured tenants to move, without assurances that they would have an enforceable right to return, rather than repair the unit. In the event where residents moved out of their units, DCHA additionally adopted a practice of keeping such units vacant, which allowed a significant number of units at Barry Farm to remain vacant months before HUD approved the demolition. The Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs and Foley & Lardner are representing the tenants. “Now, with redevelopment at hand, families with children stand to be left behind in a manner that is discriminatory and illegal,” Joseph Edmondson, a partner at Foley & Lardner, said in a release. “It appears Barry Farm residents are being written off by the very public housing administrators with responsibility for providing them with safe and habitable housing in an attempt to clear the property and squelch dissent.”The historic Barry Farm neighborhood is located East of the Anacostia river in Southeast D.C., along Suitland Parkway. The community dates back to the postbellum period when emancipated Blacks settled there.“The lawsuit seeks the tenants’ rights to return after redevelopment and to ensure unit sizes measure in terms of bedrooms,” said Edmondson. “We allege that this is discriminatory against families with children.”DCHA has not released a response to the lawsuit. On Sept. 6, residents in Ward 8 are holding a press conference and rally to outline steps D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the city’s government could take to protect lower-income residents against slumlords and displacement.last_img read more

Now Evernote Wants to Help Organize Your Physical Life Too

first_img 3 min read October 2, 2014 Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. You probably know Evernote for its organizational app, but now the company is getting into a new product type: furniture. The company recently partnered with Pfeiffer to create a new line of desk products with the goal of organizing the modern desktop. Many of the new products are making their debut this week at Evernote’s annual conference, EC4.“Our approach to our physical products doesn’t stray far from the original vision that drives our app development,” says Jeff Zwerner, vice president of design at Evernote. “As a company, we are building a workspace that lets you accomplish your life’s work whether you work as an individual or are part of a team in a larger organization.”This year’s furniture additions to the “Evernote Market” follow the launch of several other Evernote-branded physical goods released last year, including a line of Post-It notes and a stylus for the iPad.Related: Notes Scattered Everywhere? Declutter With This Tool.“Working with physical materials allows us to exploit the tactile properties of texture and touch in ways we are unable to in the digital domain,” Zwerner says. “The result to the consumer is improved productivity and enjoyment of the work required to accomplish their goals as they switch modes from physical and digital work modes.”When designing the products, designer Eric Pfieffer says he thought a lot about problems that occur on our desktops and how best to solve them.“We tried to construct these wood products in a way that would bring a lot of function to the desktop,” he says. The products are meant to be not only functional, but also look like something you’ll want to show off.The laptop stand, for example, has an extra compartment to hold your phone, keys or other stray desk items. One of the iPad stands has a space specifically for that Evernote-branded Adonit stylus that launched last year.Related: 13 Business Productivity Apps for the Real-World EntrepreneurSome of the ideas behind the products came from Evernote’s own office expansion. Zwerner says that they noticed everyone had a good deal of miscellaneous clutter on their work surfaces with no real place to put it. Add to that laptop cables, monitors and tablets, and you have a real mess on your hands.“Between our facilities and IT teams, we tried to purchase products to manage the aesthetics and the functional issues this working style creates and couldn’t find any universal solutions,” he says. “We saw an opportunity there and had a point of view on what a solution required in terms of both function and form. Knowing what the explicit solutions needed to solve for, we wanted the design to be elegant and emotive.”You can check out the fruits of that collaboration now in the Evernote Market.Related: The Secrets of the World’s Most Successful Mobile Apps Register Now »last_img read more
