CLEVELAND — Six months passed, and this atmosphere looks and feels different. The poster of LeBron James no longer hangs outside of the Cavaliers’ arena. The arena appeared nearly half-full. And with James’ departure to the Los Angeles Lakers last summer, the Warriors showed in a 129-105 win over the Cavaliers on Wednesday that they no longer view this matchup as an NBA Finals preview.“It was a little weird,” Warriors guard Stephen Curry said. “Just tried to keep the energy up and focus on …

(Image: Primestars Marketing Facebook)Brand South Africa ReporterIt seems impossible until it’s done – this was one of the key messages remembered by schoolchildren who were part of Step Up 2 a Start Up II event, held countrywide on 12 September.Step Up 2 a Start Up II ran over five weeks on Saturdays, from 15 August to 12 September. About 300 learners gathered at specific cinemas each Saturday, where they learned how to start their own businesses. About 15 000 learners across the country were reached. All five sessions ran simultaneously in 15 Ster-Kinekor cinemas across the country, including The Boardwalk in Richards Bay, Gateway Commercial in Umhlanga, North Cape Mall in Kimberly, and Sandton City in Johannesburg. All of the events began at the same time, at 9am.Facilitated by PrimeStars Marketing and endorsed by Proudly South African, the initiative celebrates youth entrepreneurship on the big screen. Step Up 2 a Start Up II is mainly sponsored by the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), Absa, MTN, Sasol and Putco.Brand South Africa contributed as well under its Play Your Part initiative. Play Your Part is a national campaign that encourages all South Africans to contribute to positive change. Step Up 2 a Start Up II is a perfect example of that because it encourages young people to identify and solve problems in their communities through entrepreneurship. The learners were given a toolkit and were encouraged to combine their theatre learning with their classroom learning. Step Up 2 a Start Up II, said the organisers, also showcased role models and prepared learners for entry into the Maker-preneur of the Year Competition.InspiredSpeaking on Saturday, Contrak Molewa of Bokgoni Technical School in Atteridgeville, Tshwane said that before watching the movie his ideas to start a business were scattered. “I have so many ideas. And I now know which direction I want to go to.”The 17-year-old said the film taught him that it was okay to fail in order to succeed. “The film was inspiring. I found out that Steve Jobs also failed a few times. Another thing I learned was that networking was important.”Moses Mhlwana, a 16-year-old learned from Bokgoni Technical School, said he realised that entrepreneurs must have ideas that would help Africans. People must benefit from your idea. “As an entrepreneur you should think about how you can improve life [of those around you].”Vanessa Sibanda said she did not know that starting a business would be so easy. “I learned [from the film] that we can get ideas from adults around us,” said the 13-year-old, who attends Sunrise Secondary School in Diepsloot, Johannesburg. The competitionIn addition, the Maker-preneur of the Year Competition is open to learners in grades 9 to 12 who have participated in the Step Up 2 a Start Up II cinema programme. Schools attending were chosen by the Department of Basic Education. Other schools wanting to join the programme should contact the NYDA.In the competition, the students need to adhere to the credo: “Design it, make it, sell it.” Competition prizes include bursaries and electronic goods. The competition closes on 30 October. The finalists will be notified between 16 and 20 November.Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… selena larson Tags:#Embedded Posts#Google#wordpress Google+ launched two new features it said will help writers and other publishers get more attention on Google News and search. WordPress and TypePad powered blogs using Google+ Sign-In will now link all posts to the author’s Google+ account. The author’s name and information will appear in Google News and search results, thus increasing distribution and discovery, as well as making it easier for readers to engage with the author.Following the lead of Twitter and Facebook, Google+ also now allows publishers to embed public G+ updates in blog posts and on other websites. Users can follow the original update’s author and comment on or +1 the post as they would on the Google+ stream. Google claims this feature will tie conversations together, as comments will also appear wherever the post is embedded. The features are only available to WordPress and TypePad users, but Google is experimenting with other platforms including About.com, WikiHow, SkillPages and Examiner.com. It announced the updates at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference today. Follow the Puck Cate Lawrence How do we conceptualize aging and disability in an era where there’s a heady excitement about a future reality that surpasses our current lived experiences of health and old age? Consider future tech such as Elon Musk’s Neuralink, a growing movement of people into posthumanism and of course fiction like the TV series Black Mirror with the incredibly poignant San Junipero episode giving a fictional account of life beyond our physical beings.See also: Will data analytics change our healthcare system? With these thoughts in mind, it’s not every day that you talk to a hugely successful tech entrepreneur who comes out of retirement to create a company serving the aged and people with disabilities. CEO and co-founder of K4Connect, Scott Moody has done just that. You may recall Moody as the co-founder of AuthenTec, a company that provided mobile security software licenses to mobile manufacturing companies and biometrics sensor technology, such as fingerprint sensors and NFC technology to mobile and computer manufacturers. The company was acquired by Apple, in 2o12 for $356 million. From tech security to health and well-beingToday Moody heads a team of technologists intent on improving the health and well-being of the aged and people with disabilities. I met with Moody to learn about his new venture. Their first product, K4Community, leverages the power of our platform to deliver technology to the tens of millions of older adults living in senior living communities.Their mission is to serve the underserved with the belief that technology shouldn’t be just about the next generation but every generation. K4Community is specifically designed and tailored for the residents of senior living facilities, through three central pillars: Helping to make life simpler (integrated smart home); healthier (connected wellness); and happier (social engagement). As Moody explained:“We’re a mission centered technology companies really serving older adults and those living with disabilities and we achieve this through a software platform (which we call a connected life platform) to integrate all aspects of your life into a single application. This means a more independent life a that is oriented around IoT. This includes home automation, such as thermostats, sensors, door locks and video doorbells. Then we wrap in healthier elements so that connected wellness and home products connect such as a garment activity tracker to a scale, a blood pressure monitor and tele-monitors.The happier element is that as your mobility is becoming reduced, the whole idea of being able to provide or keep a connection with family and friends. So those are things like video chat or Audio Chat, messaging, picture sharing.”The K4 platform is a patented software platform that is open, modular and scalable. As Moody explains,“One of the things that we’ve done is while everybody ran to the cloud we actually use a combination of the cloud and edge process. So you know if your internet is down, if your wifi is down, your house continues to live, the latency is exceedingly quick, So if grandma is getting out of bed at 2 a.m. in the morning, you want the light to come on almost immediately. You don’t want to delay it 20 or 30 seconds.”The adoption rate of K4Connect’s technology amongst senior residents is impressive. Moody says:“In the 11 communities that have K4Community installed, 100% actually use the home automation features. They may not use the app but they use the home automation. Lights are coming on automatically when they get out of bed. Thermostats are changing automatically depending on the time of day to make rooms comfortable or to aid sleep. And then 75% of the clients are using the app, on average for about 15 minutes a day. I know that if you had a Silicon Valley company come out and say that 75% of their target demographic use their app, it would be pretty big. 15 minutes a day is as much as you see on pinterest or almost anyone besides Facebook.” Related Posts Tags:#connected health#featured#health data#Home Automation#Internet of Things#IoT#IoT platform#sensor tech#top#wearables The value of IoT data to health diagnostics and researchIntrinsic to the work of K4Connect is the value of the data technology that is delivered through the home automation, wearables and social enhancement. Telemedicine is gradually become a reality, enabling people to access remote medical services from the comfort of their homes. As Moody explains, a smart home is able to enhance this experience:“The doctor can see if you’ve been getting out of bed at night or restless at night. They can see a record of your heart rate and other body metrics from wearable tech. They know whether you’ve bee leaving the home or talking to family, meaning that they have a greater body of information than they could glean in a simple 10-minute visit in the doctor’s surgery. One of the things that I find about older adults is that they are very willing to participate in studies to not only help themselves but help others so I think that in time we will be a ready resource for research through those volunteers. Just think, if you want to try out a new Multiple Sclerosis medication. You’re not only trying out the medication, all of a sudden we have all this other information we can provide separate to what is ascertained on their visit to the research clinic. We’re this platform where you can integrate a lot of different features, e.g. how much they’re sleeping, how much they’re communicating how much they’re moving around. All of this information that we can provide to that study that they wouldn’t have had otherwise.”K4Connect is at work on two related products, Casework home care which is for professional home care providers providing a service to clients in their homes and K4Life, a product for clients living in their own homes. With our rapidly aging population, we can expect this to be just the beginning. This is supposed to be the Summer Olympics, where the heat and excitement go together. After a week’s sunshine and warm weather, it again became cold and wet on Sunday. Brollies, as umbrellas are called here, were out and formal suits were again out.Having forgotten to take an international medical travel insurance before leaving New Delhi, I have been careful. Even when it has been close to 31 degrees C, when people said it was a heat wave here, I did not shed the jacket.Today, it was all about a strong breeze and the chill which made me wonder if you call actually call it a Summer Olympics. In Beijing, I dealt with the weather very differently as you couldn’t wear anything more than a tee shirt and shorts. Before that, in Sydney 2000, the weather was again hot with a high level of ultra violet radiation. So sun tan lotion was a must. It’s almost an obsession for people to talk about the weather in Britain. And today, one thing was clear, if you want to sample all the seasons in a fortnight, this is the place to be in.As long as the sun shines, it is a pleasure to be in Wimbledon or any other outdoor arena. But once it rains, it gets miserable. And the wait for players to step out is irritating.Agreed, there are no traffic snarls like New Delhi and drains don’t get choked. However, if you are not used to the strong breeze, it can get dicey. So how do the temperature changes affect people? If it is athletes, some like it and some don’t. For example, when the Indian hockey team came to Europe for training and getting used to the weather, they didn’t like the chill. In fact, coach Nobbs said last week: “The hotter it gets, the better for our boys, but we will play in any weather.”In the Olympic swimming pool, the water temperature is regulated and it’s indoor, so there is no worry for the swimmers. In other arenas where matches are played indoor the effect of rain and temperature is not much. One of the common jokes in London among the Asian community is why this city should not host a Summer Olympics as there is hardly a proper summer. The reasoning was a bit bizarre as unlike the Winter Olympics where there has to be snow and cold temperatures, the Summer Olympics can be held in heat and humidity or even cool weather.Even as some NRIs were walking around in raincoats and asking me if I could help with tickets, I laughed. I told them I was a mediaperson and needed no ticket.”There are so many empty seats and what LOCOG is doing beats us,” said Sanjay Patel, a Gujarati settled in east London. His plight was indeed pitiable as he was willing to buy tickets in black. At the other end of London, in Wimbledon, Mahesh Bhupathi was frustrated as he wanted to buy tickets for his family. The point is, when we had empty stadia at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, everyone went for Suresh Kalmadi’s jugular. Over here, the local media doesn’t seem to be attacking LOCOG chairman Lord Sebastian Coe in the same manner.Whether venue seats have been sold to corporates or the online sales have not been a success, it is a fact that stadia in London are not full.Venues are far flung and though the transportation is good, travelling from one place to another is time consuming.I was trying to get some tickets for the India vs Holland hockey match on Monday and was told it has been sold out. Given the huge Indian population in Britain, hockey is still a big draw. There is no perfect ticketing system in place for major multi discipline sporting events anywhere in the world . And having spent almost a well already in London, I have not see a current ticket counter. So if anyone tells me London is the best host, I would tend to disagree.advertisement
Right in the middle of the whole controversy with Ousmane Dembele at Barcelona, club legend Carles Puyol wanted to send the French winger a message. The current situation between FC Barcelona and Ousmane Dembele is quite complicated, the club has already expressed that they may want to sell him but Carles Puyol made one final effort to turn him around. The problems that the ‘Mosquito’ is having right now are related with a lack of discipline that is related to his young age, he’s been getting advice from all his teammates and even from his National Team manager. But perhaps getting a warning from Puyol himself might be the words that can make him realize where he is, not every player has the privilege of playing for FC Barcelona in their careers and almost nobody gets a direct scalding from Carles Puyol himself. If you are too young to remember, let us tell you that you missed out on arguably the most disciplined FC Barcelona player of all time, he is also among the most respected figures of the institution and he even has the admiration of players who were his rivals throughout his career.Puyol was part of a charity paddle tournament where he was seen playing alongside his friend Gerard Pique, one of Barcelona’s skippers today.🗣 Carles Puyol: “I don’t know how the dressing room works nowadays but it’s clear that everyone must help Dembélé for the common good. Sometimes, when you’re young, you don’t realize what you have, where you are, and you let things escape from your grasp.”— FC Barcelona Fl 🏆 (@FCBarcelonaFl) November 14, 2018When he attended the press after the event, members of the media wanted to know what he thought about Ousmane Dembele’s current situation and what the French player needed to do in order to reverse it.“Dembele is young, I’m not in the dressing room and I don’t know the day to day,” he said to Marca reporters.“The team have to help him because it’s not easy to adapt to the philosophy of Barcelona where everything is very different.”“Here he’s arrived late to training and he must learn that isn’t good enough.”He has good teachers who will help him, but it will depend on his attitude.”“It’s important that he reflects and thinks about things, because when you’re young you don’t realize what you are letting go.”“In the management of a dressing room there are problems every day because there are many egos in there,” he added.Top 10 players who played for both Barcelona and Valencia Boro Tanchev – September 14, 2019 Time to talk about the best players who represented both Barcelona and Valencia, prior to their La Liga encounter at Camp Nou this evening.“We all believe that we are the best and we must play, and the job for the coach to choose.”“The important thing then is the attitude of each player, because being ambitious is fine, but respecting the group is always above that.”“I think he’s amenable and if he wants to improve and learn, he is in the best place.”But it depends on him.”Carles Puyol (Barcelona legend): “Dembélé must reflect and think about where he is.” [via md] pic.twitter.com/GxyTs4UzLy— Barça Centre (@barcacentre) November 14, 2018Puyol was also questioned about Gerard Pique’s advice to the French youngster, the Catalan player told Dembele that he needed to start living football 24/7 and Carles’ reaction was funny as he recalled that Pique was also quite a troublemaker back in the day. However, the former Barça skipper also remembered that Gerard is the one who brought his professional life in Barcelona a little bit of joy due to his lively personality.“It’s great that Gerard finally understood it,” joked Puyol.“It’s true that as a professional, you have to live football 24/7, if he says it it’s because it must be true.”“But in all seriousness, I’ve always said that Gerard’s arrival has been very important to me because I really did live football 24/7 and you always have to leave a little time to enjoy life.”“You have to find the moments to have a good time, which is something that Gerard taught me.”“But it is also true that playing at the highest level is always very demanding and you have to stay focused in order to maintain the same level of performance,” he concluded. What do you think about Carles Puyol’s advice to Ousmane Dembele?
