A week before Thanksgiving, the NFL’s top teams had plenty to be grateful for. Eleven of the top 13 teams in Week 12’s edition of our Elo ratings won their games, with the lone exceptions either losing to another good team on the road (the Arizona Cardinals, then ranked No. 2, fell to the third-ranked Seattle Seahawks) or suffering a stunning upset (the Kansas City Chiefs’ ill-fated trip to Oakland). And eight of the bottom 10 teams lost, generating the widest spread this season between the league’s haves and have-nots (as measured by the standard deviation of every team’s Elo ratings).There’s been a lot of talk about 2014 being a season of parity in the NFL (especially after the aforementioned Raiders victory completed this year’s “circle of parity,” the phenomenon by which any team could claim superiority over another via the transitive property). In one sense, that’s accurate. There’s no dominant Super Bowl favorite: The New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers and Denver Broncos have gone through hot and cold periods over the past 12 weeks, and the Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers have not even consistently been favored to make the playoffs. Nobody knows what to make of the upstart Cardinals (now less so than ever). By that standard, this season is as wide open as any.But this year has also seen a stark disparity between the NFL’s good and bad teams. The 2014 season features the 10th-largest standard deviation of Elo ratings through 12 weeks of any season since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger and the second-largest since 1986 (trailing only the 2009 season).Nearly all of the most imbalanced seasons took place before the NFL instituted true free agency and a salary cap in the early 1990s, which evened out payroll spending across the league and prevented dominant teams from hoarding talent. These measures had the effect of increased parity, both within seasons and between them.Pockets of inequality still emerge from time to time, even in today’s equipoised NFL. But most of the teams at the bottom of our rankings were above average (some significantly so) at some point in the past few seasons. Late in 2012, the Houston Texans and Atlanta Falcons — now ranked No. 23 and No. 25, respectively — had Elo ratings that would rank second in the NFL right now. And among the bottom third of teams in this week’s rankings, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Washington and the New York Giants also had above-average Elo ratings as recently as two seasons ago.The league’s bad teams look particularly bad right now, and the poor got even poorer this past weekend. But even at an imbalanced moment, you can see the handiwork of the NFL’s parity machine.Last week, we wrote about how the Denver Broncos were a team in disarray, losing more points of Elo rating over the previous three weeks than any team in the NFL. In this past Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins, it looked like disaster was imminent again — Denver’s win probability was down to 10.2 percent late in the third quarter — before Peyton Manning sparked a comeback victory for the Broncos.The game wasn’t especially crucial to the Broncos’ postseason odds (they gained just 8 percentage points of playoff probability last week), but in concert with the Chiefs’ stunning loss at Oakland, it had a big effect on the AFC West race. By the end of the weekend, the Broncos had gained 24 percentage points of division-win probability, bringing their chances to 79 percent. The Chiefs lost 25 percentage points — by far the week’s biggest change in division-win probability. What had been surprisingly close to a toss-up race for the AFC West is back under Denver’s control.Week 12 was pretty damaging to Kansas City’s playoff chances. A week ago, the team was looking at a 41 percent probability of chasing down the Broncos for the division, and it had the conference’s best chance of securing a wild card slot (42 percent). But with their AFC West odds dwindling, the Chiefs probably need the wild card to make the playoffs. It might seem as though the Chiefs are still well positioned in that department — the Dolphins had been their primary threat going into the weekend — but after the AFC North rivals Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens both won, the AFC’s wild card picture is as crowded as ever.The NFC playoff picture didn’t change all that much, although the Seahawks are once again favorites to make the postseason after beating the Cardinals. Although the game could be seen as the proverbial “statement win” with regard to NFC West supremacy, the loss didn’t really affect Arizona’s playoff chances; the Cardinals are still 94 percent likely to be in.Elo’s had a few solid weeks against the point spread. Don’t let it fool you: You shouldn’t take these ratings to Vegas and bet with them. But it is always fun to compare the gambling lines to those which would be predicted by each team’s pregame Elo ratings.One of biggest differences this week between Elo and Vegas involves a marquee matchup, in which the Patriots travel to Green Bay to face the Packers. The Packers have been on a roll of late, gaining the most Elo rating points of any NFL team over the previous three weeks, but still they rank just sixth in Elo. At least some of that is because Green Bay entered the season ranked 17th in the league with a below-average 1495 Elo rating, owing to a relatively down 2013 season that saw quarterback Aaron Rodgers miss seven games.With Rodgers back and playing at an incredibly high level as of late, Vegas has reacted quickly. The oddsmakers clearly consider the Packers one of the two or three best teams in the NFL. For their part, the Patriots have been on fire as well, so the fact that they are three-point road underdogs implies that the market considers them about even with Green Bay. Elo thinks the Patriots are roughly four points better per game than the Packers at a neutral site, so it will be interesting to get some measure of a referendum on Vegas and Elo’s different opinions of the two teams.CORRECTION (3:53 p.m., Nov. 26, 2014): A previous version of the Week 13 NFL matchups table listed incorrect numbers for the Elo win percentages and point spreads. On May 18, 2016, Miller became the subject of a federalinvestigation after law enforcement officials received images depicting child sexual exploitation, whichwere shared by Miller using the Bittorrent peer-to-peer file-sharing network. Miller was previously adjudicated in 2005 for the sexual abuse of several children. At sentencing in this matter, Judge Burgess noted the seriousness of the images in this case and of his prior conduct. Phillip Miller, 27, of Kenai, was sentenced today by Chief U.S. District Judge Timothy M. Burgess, to serve six years in prison, followed by a lifetime term of supervised release.

On top of a new name, StudioTEN also has a new face. Concurrent with the rebranding, TEN brought in renowned advertising executive Jerry Solomon, whose credits include the Emmy-winning Ad Council campaign “Love Has No Labels,” and, most notably, Apple’s famous “Get a Mac” commercials, which Adweek named the “campaign of the decade” in 2010. Jerry Solomon Folio: Coming over from the advertising side of the industry, what attracted you to TEN? Solomon: We’re agnostic. If there’s somebody at Motor Trend who has a great, authentic voice and wants to jump onto the filmmaking side, I’d say bring them on. Likewise, if I’ve got somebody who is a great filmmaker but wants to get more into the car world, bring them on, too. That’s what’s great about this place — I’ve got a group of creatives here who not only ideate, but execute. We might have someone sitting in the room who comes up with a great concept, and then when it comes time to execute it, that person might go ahead and direct it. We’re really seeing projects all the way through, with a singular voice. Solomon: The original programming stuff that we do is remarkable. We have nine programs that go across our YouTube channel, which has the largest automotive audience out there: over 4.5 million subscribers. People are watching these things in crazy numbers. Brands want to go ahead and be a part of that experience. Key to achieving that, says Dickey, is an aggressive expansion of its video production arm, which the company launched in 2014 and subsequently nurtured into a robust operation, comprising over 50 employees and a 30,000-square-foot Los Angeles studio. Solomon: The best clients are the ones that realize that they want to bring value to the audience. They have to think of themselves almost as programmers with a brand message. It’s definitely a challenge to say, “We know that you want to promote this car, but let’s find an entertaining way to do it that feels holistic or seamless to our audience.” The studio, formerly known as “MindOverEye,” was rebranded “StudioTEN” last month in an effort to more closely align it with TEN’s overall corporate structure. Folio: So is it safe to say that we can expect branded content to be a major focus for StudioTEN going forward? “We want to be the most powerful automotive media company in the world,” CEO Scott Dickey tells Folio:. Jerry Solomon: I had been in the commercial business for 20-plus years. It was always a talent sell, and it was also an interruptive medium. When you make TV commercials as long as I have, it was purely executional. You sat there and the stuff that you made was just going to go on TV, and it was going to be that stuff in between shows that people didn’t really like. I could see it in the way the budgets were and our interaction with agencies — you started to feel very outdated. One of my biggest challenges is determining how a brand gets their voice into that arena, not just in the original programming, but also across advertising, delivered to that enthusiast in a way that’s authentic and genuine and doesn’t interrupt their experience. We’re going to make a lot of that stuff: original programming, branded content, with events and social around all of it. “There was always a concern that having our own production studio might be a threat to our agency partners, so we wanted it at arm’s length,” says Dickey. “But branded content has become such a huge part of the equation that it no longer made sense to have [the studio] differentiated.” The relationship between consumers and brands and that interaction was changing. My two teenaged daughters do not watch TV commercials. They may watch branded content if it’s interesting to them, but they like a non-interrupted experience. I wanted a challenge to figure out what was part of the future, and TEN offered that to me. If we continue to serve our audience, it will continue to grow. If it continues to grow and we’re communicating with them the right way, then brands will be interested in working with us, because we own that group who really feels we are authentic. Solomon: You can’t be a part of the interruption; you need to be a part of the experience. We have to make stuff for an audience and in a brand voice, and we have to make it authentic. It’s really a combination of audience, idea, and execution. I think they used to live in sort of mutually exclusive worlds, and now they all need to be interconnected. Folio: What are some ways in which that relationship between consumers and brands has changed? That’s what we want to create in a digital experience, where the best brands come to us and say, “Take something with our car, make it fun, connect our brand to your audience, and feel that you’re giving them something that’s not just interruptive.” TEN: The Enthusiast Network, whose brands include Motor Trend, Automobile, and Hot Rod, among several others, enters 2017 with a clear but ambitious goal. Solomon, who will oversee StudioTEN as managing director, was chosen because of his deep understanding of how to create content that resonates with consumers while still delivering a brand message, according to Dickey. Solomon: We want to be the ultimate destination for video in automotive and action/outdoor. The investments we’re going to make will be in greater creative talent. We’re definitely looking to create partnerships in high-tech spaces like VR and AR. It’s about us connecting our original programming and branded content with our audience across platforms. So it’s going to be an investment in both talent and new technology. Folio: Is it a challenge to balance delivering a client’s message while also providing value to your audience? Folio: sat down with Solomon to learn more about the future of branded content, original video production, and how he plans to use his commercial experience to bring StudioTEN to new heights. Folio: What kinds of new talent are you looking to bring on? When it comes to talent, if someone’s got the right attitude and loves telling great stories, I don’t care if you come from Timbuktu or Motor Trend. I can teach people about the business and about content creation, but there’s certain innate talent you can’t teach. I base it on the individual. It’s not about just trying to find the cheapest solution. One of the greatest compliments on anything I’ve ever been involved in was when The New York Times did a piece about the Mac and PC commercials. Having executive produced all of those spots, when they did an article saying, “The best series on TV is a commercial,” they saw that campaign as almost interstitial programming that worked alongside broadcast TV. Folio: What are some of your initial plans for building out StudioTEN?
The organisers of MIPCOM have reported 14,000 attendees for this year’s event, with 4,900 of those buyers, and 1,500 of the acquisition execs working for digital and SVOD service.Reed Midem said the kids-focused MIPJunior event, which ran on the weekend before MIPCOM, had a record 1,600 attendees, compared with the 1,400 reported last year. There was a 10% uptick in kids buyer numbers, with 630 in town.The 2016 numbers are up year-on-year, with Reed reporting 13,700 last year and 4,800 buyers, 1,300 of whom were from digital services. The 2015 total was the same as 2014, meaning MIPCOM had its best-attended market for several years.At the main MIPCOM event, there were 2,000 companies exhibiting. Japan was the country of honour and there were 500 execs from Japanese companies in town as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sent a video address to delegates.Also from Japan, Sony Corporation President and CEO Kazuo Hirai gave the opening keynote.On the ground the heightened security efforts were visible, with mounted police and heavily-armed soldiers on patrol, as well as increased bag and security checks upon entrance.The local public were also invited in for two of the drama screenings; Red Arrow’s Mata Hari and 20th Century Fox Television Distribution’sThe Rocky Horror Picture Show.
